A couple of weeks ago a few of us met at the church to deck it out for the holiday season. The hunt was on for the decorations and of course the ever elusive lights.

Boxes, bins, garbage bags full of treasures and pots of flowers were hauled upstairs but, no lights. Scissors, push pins, tape and wire were scavenged from all over but, no lights.

Finally greenery started to appear along surfaces, swags on pews and Christmas flowers replacing autumn bouquets. The tree was ready to be dressed.

But, something else was happening too. The church was filled with chatter and laughter. Music filled the sanctuary . Spiritual music from all genres, classical, contemporary, a little bit country and a little bit rock’n roll.

I remember standing there and thinking I wish someone would walk in and see this celebration and want to join in.

So as we continued to sing and dance the church’s appearance was slowly transformed. It was finally agreed that an emergency run to the store was required for lights. With these tucked in the garlands, the advent candles ready we were done.

A peace settled over the sanctuary and we lowered the lights and we observed what we had done this day. Yes, they were just Christmas decorations, yes, many would think they were just there to make the space look pretty. But, we knew that this day of fun and joy was special and we were privileged.

We got to prepare The Lord’s House for the most important celebration ever. THE BIRTH OF OUR LORD JESUS.
